DECEMBER 2020

https://babysue.com/2020-Dec-LMNOP-dONW7.html#anchor79935

With support from ex-bandmate Lester Nuby (this project was entirely created by the two), Jaco has recorded ten tracks that will satisfy just about anyone who loves good solid rock/pop. These songs feature cool rhythms, kickass guitar riffs, nice memorable melodies, and an overall upbeat vibe. If you've grown tired of too many artists who sound too much like one another, Dose may just be the dose you're searching for. Killer tracks include "Outer Space," "Bluebird," "Sign of a Struggle," "Somebody Told Me," and "Grow Up Together." Recommended. Top pick.

“Fabergé” answers back with the perfectly mixed range of the previous cuts, and so far, it is another winner you can’t argue with the whole result of. If it isn’t something you love at this point it isn’t going to sink by now, but I can say it is terrific for my speed. “Bluebird" hits the spot and it is another track right up my alley, with some fantastic melodies to keep the blood pumping. I don’t see how anyone could not like this choice piece of music and vocals. And the peak of the collection is more than like where “Sign Of A Struggle” comes in and the album goes down the other side with nothing but more brilliant tracks.

Make sure you listen to the end or you’ll miss the heavier, fist-pumpin’ charm of the rousing “Grow Up Together” and “Somebody Told Me” is as hooky as anything that Fountains of Wayne ever did (and to be clear, I love F.O.W.)

https://neufutur.com/2020/10/jaco-takes-you-on-a-joyride-through-time-and-space-on-the-new-album-dose/

Jaco takes you on a joyride through time and space on the new album – Dose, with ten strong power pop tracks with just the right weight level to keep a positive light shining in 2020. The songs are light and fluffy but rocking and twangy, with Jake Waitzman being the man behind the moniker on the second Jaco album. . . . “Outer Space” says it all, it really opens the album off right by making it at a pace worth getting into instead of deciding right away it’s only going to rock and not have any subtle nuances that pick up later. This is the right choice, as well as following the opening track with the likes of “Weigh You” hitting a little harder and making it easier to get into that way. I was taken back to the 80s, back to when the voices started changing and things started getting more romantic in the music scene.

The first thing Jaco manages to do is captivate with a spacey pop admix that you can’t walk away from once it starts. The instant intrigue earned on “Outer Space” instantly establishes that, and you are grooving. The opening cut just runs smoothly across the guitar and vocal spectrum and plays like a hypnotic hit of the early 80s that would not be mistaken for bands like The Cars or anyone of that particular-ilk.

The album has mostly modern ideas throughout, but once in a while you get the obligatory retro track that almost fools but makes sure to nod to the old times and “Fabergé” is most certainly one of those tracks the album is totally good for. And being a sucker for the classics, especially the 80s, this is right up my alley and I find it enormously satisfying. The same can be said for most of these songs with a few even making a better impression on me, to make it even more interesting than that. “Bluebird” is just so good I don’t know how to describe how it makes me feel, and it is obvious Jaco plays the Beatles in his head because of where some of the great ideas root from. Lead guitar on the album is handled by Lester Nuby III, with Waitzman doing the drums, rhythm guitar and some keys while stepping up front for a full self-ensemble.

The Birmingham singer-songwriter pulls together elements of power pop and indie rock on the track, which has something of the Pavement/Teenage Fanclub about it, with its slacker vocals, killer tunes, and that rare mix of uplifting and melancholy that purveys the whole thing. Synths bleed into these brushes of guitar and pulsating drums as it moves into wistful, blissed out psychedelia.

The songs are truly magnificent and really fit in at the right time for all that is going on in the world these are positive and uplifting songs of the power pop variety of which any indie music lover can appreciate. . . “Outer Space” sets the entire tone for this eclectic batch of straight forward but very-diverse album full of well written, produced and arranged pop-laden songs. It starts the album off on a somber note, but it’s very hypnotic and just plain enjoyable. You’re wanting more and you get it track after track, with “Weigh You,” starting what is the rest of a solid outing as Jaco gets more into his low-end vocal prowess. And “Fabergé” earns my selection for the album’s finest track, with a couple of close contenders, one of them behind it and one of them up next.

Highlights include “Weigh You,” which reflects Joe Walsh-like guitars riding a rolling, crunching rhythm, while Jaco’s voice takes on hints of prog-rock merged with alt-country aromas. “Fabergé” gives off Tom Petty-Esque tints as gleaming, jangle-lite guitar imbue the harmonics with platinum tangs. Jaco’s exudes tasty drawling, twang-filled inflections backed by soft, radiant harmonies. “Sign Of A Struggle” travels on dark guitars pushing out spectral energy, almost akin to alt-rock grunge. Oscillating synths inject the tune with psychedelic filaments as Jaco’s rasping tones give the lyrics an ominous aspect. I love the blistering, psych-seasoned guitar solo on this track.

SEPTEMBER 2020

Here's a nice bit of recidivist 90s indie pop nostalgia. With the right amount of mix mastering and genre blending, this shiny set takes you back to the future in nice style. He got he chops, well honed in a bunch of other crews to exercise his multi instrumentalist chops and go the distance. Fun stuff.

If you listen straight through- and you should, because you’ll find you’ll want the full Dose - the collection’s two most salient features are the way Nuby modulates darkness and light (and other moods along the spectrum) via his electric guitar and the (apologies to Steely Dan) pretzel logic of Waitzman’s lyrics – all so incredibly vivid and visually dynamic and descriptive but often playfully abstract, full of non-sequiturs and jigsawed phrases.

Jake Waitzman, aka Jaco, gives us a breath of power-pop scented air as he drawls his way through ‘Weigh You’, his latest single, out now, taken from his forthcoming album, ‘Dose’. Set to come out on October 9, the album will be released via Cornelius Chapel Records. Jaco draws us in with his Beck-like upbeat indie sound, which gives us a sense of direction in this often otherwise dreary, colourless doom-and-gloom of Covid-19.

Taking the warm guitar pop inflections of Teenage Fanclub and adding an extra Alex Chilton sweetness, Birmingham’s Jaco, offers everything that power-pop fans should ever need.

https://survivingthegoldenage.com/jaco-faberge/

The album is the second in a working trilogy. Surviving the Golden Age is excited to premiere the new single, “Fabergé.” . . . Jaco has a lot of advise to give: “don’t set your clock back again/don’t let your body slack.” At least he disperses it over twinkling guitar arpeggios and noisy drums. It is reminiscent of artists like R.E.M. or Big Star–a beautiful, catchy mixture of jangle and power pop.

AUGUST 2020

“Weigh You” is a catchy college-rocker (kids, we called it “college rock” back in the day because songs like this would only be played on college radio) that gets straight A’s for all of its pensive, power-pop pursuits. Says Waitzman of the track, “Lyrically, this song is a conversation with someone—maybe yourself—trying to build them up but not preach to them, while admitting your own flaws.”
